Q: What is there to do in my free time?

When you are not teaching or building there are plenty of things to explore around Quezaltenango, such as:

  • climbing nearby volcanoes, including Tajumulco (highest peak in Central America), Santa Maria (can see lava spitting out from Santaguito);
  • hot springs within 1 hour bus ride, including Fuentes Geroginas;
  • walking around the city center full of museums, Mayan craft stores, cafes, restaurants, bars and markets;
  • the salsa scene is very active in Xela. Lessons are cheap and there are lots of clubs.
  • Lake Atitlan is two hours away by chicken bus or private shuttle, and is dotted with beautiful villages rich in Mayan culture, and there are volcanoes to hike!
  • Antigua is four hours away by chicken bus or private shuttle, the most popular tourist town in Guatemala, filled with Mayan culture, beautiful convents, volcanoes to hike, and delicious cafes, restaurants and a lively bar scene.

Here we have a very positive family-oriented culture. We are looking for volunteers who flourish in an environment like this.

We look forward to welcoming you to our family!
